Living in the present moment!

Living in the present moment!

Throughout our lives, each and every day consists of going up and down on a roller coaster of energy and emotion; sometimes feelings of happiness, gratitude and love, but at other times, it may be feelings of pain, loneliness and suffering.

Living in the present moment does not mean that you only see or feel the negative or positive experiences, it is becoming aware and accepting of each of those moments as being equally divine; all equally having the power to teach you more about yourself. In every moment we experience, we have the ability to truly take ownership of our perception and decide to follow the path that will create a better outcome.

To understand living in the present, we must understand what it means to not live in the present.

Humans spend a majority of their waking hours reliving the events of yesterday or worrying about an imaginary tomorrow. Existing in the present, but dissatisfied with the here and now, looking to be somewhere else, somewhere better. Many of us can’t seem to stop our minds from racing forward to fixate over what could go wrong or backward into rumination over what has gone wrong. Our continuous diversions into a past that is out of our hands and a future that is not yet in our grasp is also the source of most of our worry and anxiety.

It may seem like all our stress about our work life, relationship life, or personal life are entirely based on current conditions; however, in reality, the ways we experience, react, feel and torture ourselves in these moments are often mere reflections of unresolved feelings that have now been stirred up.

All this constant worrying, negative thinking, and always expecting the worst can slowly destroy your emotional, spiritual, and physical health. It begins to drain your emotional strength leaving you restless and drained, it leads to insomnia, headaches, digestive problems, and muscle tension, and makes it difficult to focus at work, school and your relationships.

You may take your negative feelings out on the people around you, self-medicate with alcohol or drugs, or try to distract yourself by zoning out in front of screens.

However, this is a mental habit that can be broken.

When moments in our life trigger negative experiences and place us back into our old patterns of negative thinking, we have the ability to stop, take a breath, and become one with the present moment.

This interrupts the old pattern or way of thinking and creates a space in your mind that allows you to see the situation from a more grand perspective; what it truly is in the present moment. When we are truly in the present moment, we aren’t attaching ourselves to past or future events, we are immersed in the experience, feeling grateful for the life that we have, right here at this moment.

For example let's say you run an online business and for whatever reason your website goes down, as soon as that moment happens you have a choice.

You could immediately focus your attention on how shitty it is, how much money you may lose while the website is down, or how much of a hassle it will be to solve the problem. Focusing all of your limited power and energy to a negative story in your imagination, and you become one with the reality that this is all going to shit.

Whether you realize it or not, all this worry about future problems will drain your energy, leaving you too exhausted to focus on what’s really important - finding a solution.

Instead, you can recognize the problem, stop and take a few deep breaths, and accept the present for what it is.

(TRY THIS BREATHWORK)

“Breath all the way out and hold your breath at the bottom for 7 seconds, then breath in holding your breath at the top for as long as you can, then take 3-5 deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth sighing as you release”

Put all your energy into making a list of all the possible solutions you can think of to fix this problem and get the site running again; this list will save you from all that future stress you are bringing into your current reality.

“-Do I need to call my developer? Do I need to contact the hosting company?”

Not worrying about how much money we might lose, or how much work it’s going to be to fix. Not giving any thoughts or energy towards anything else in that moment, besides executing on what exactly needs to be done to get the site back up and running.

By separating yourself from your conditioned mind’s automatic responses of fear and negativity, you are able to accept what is present in that moment. Rather than focusing on all the possible negative future outcomes, you become fully engaged in the present moment, interrupting the endless loop of negative thoughts, worries, and emotions.

Instead of getting stuck in that cycle of focusing on the problem, you're getting right to the goods and brainstorming what you can do right now to solve this problem. You're choosing to accept what is present in that moment and instead of giving your power and energy away to another outcome based on fear or limitations, you're shifting and applying it directly to the solution. Simultaneously optimizing yourself, not only in your business life but in your personal life as well.

We often get so caught up in the stress, the worry, and the potential dangers around us, that we forget to just live.

We don’t have to place our existence in all these imaginary scary future scenarios or live in the past and dwell on negative experiences. We can stop our mind from time travelling and allow ourselves to truly connect to our inner-self and become immersed in what is actually happening around us right in that moment. We can focus on our breath, reconnect to each one of our senses, and use proven tools and techniques such as breathwork & meditation, yoga to help us thrive in the present moment every single day.

When we live in the present moment, we have a greater perspective on our external environment, allowing us to put our self-compassion into practice. We begin to see thoughts for exactly what they are — just thoughts, separate from us and from the reality of our experiences, with no power over the past, present or future. When we connect inwards and live in the present moment, we can be kind to ourselves; being able to recognize when our mind is reverting to old - potentially negative - tendencies or thought patterns and gently bring ourselves back into the present moment to create a different, more optimal outcome

QUOTES:

“Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry – all forms of fear – are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.”

– Eckhart Tolle

Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon nor too late. You don’t have to like it… it’s just easier if you do.

– Byron Katie

If you worry about what might be, and wonder what might have been, you will ignore what is.
